What is the GMAT?

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is used for admission to MBA programs and business schools worldwide.

What’s on the test?

The GMAT exam is 2 hours and 15 minutes long (with one optional 10-minute break) and consists of 64 questions in total, split between three multiple-choice sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. You can answer the three sections in any order.

Test SectionTimeNumber of Questions
Quantitative Reasoning45 mins21
Verbal Reasoning45 mins23
Data Insights45 mins20

How is the test scored?

Test takers receive a scaled score between 60 and 90 on each section. These three scaled scores are then used to create an overall scaled score between 205 and 805 in increments of 10.

When is the test offered?

The GMAT is offered remotely every day year-round, and in test centers on an ongoing basis. Applicants can take the GMAT up to five times per year (with a 16-day gap between attempts) and up to eight times total. Scores remain valid for five years after the exam.

What is the LSAT?

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is used for admission to law schools worldwide.

What’s on the test?

The LSAT exam is administered in two parts. The multiple-choice sections are administered either remotely or at a testing center and are a total of 2 hours and 20 minutes long (with one 10-minute break between the second and third sections). This portion consists of four total sections: two Logical Reasoning sections, one Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored Experimental section, which could be either Logical Reasoning or Reading Comprehension. The Argumentative Writing section is an unscored writing sample that is administered remotely at a separate time and, while not scored, must be completed for the test taker’s scores to be released.

Test SectionTimeNumber of Questions
Logical Reasoning 135 mins24-26
Logical Reasoning 235 mins24-26
Reading Comprehension35 mins26-28
Experimental (Either LR or RC—Unscored)35 mins24-28

How is the test scored?

Test takers get a raw score, which is simply the total number of correct questions, which is converted to a scaled score between 120 and 180.

When is the test offered?

The LSAT is administered eight times a year, with multiple days offered for each administration. Test takers sign up for an administration, but then have to schedule their test date and time afterwards, so they are encouraged to sign up early. Applicants can take the LSAT up to three times in an “LSAT year” (which runs from June to May), up to five times in five years, and up to seven times total. When an applicant’s scores are sent to law schools, all scores from the previous five years are included.
